304 stainless steel flat bar

The 304 stainless steel flat bar is a widely used metal that is non-magnetic. It can be severely deep drawn, making it the ideal metal for creating saucepans, sinks and hollow-ware. This grade of steel is very low in carbon. It is sometimes called 18/8, which means it’s made with 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. This chromium-nickel alloy is safe for use for majority of operations of welded construction where the temperature is kept below 800 degrees F. When in the annealed condition, it is non-magnetic. When cold worked, it can become slightly magnetic. It can’t be heat treated for strengthening or hardening, but cold working can be used for this purpose.

Type 304 stainless steel also has outstanding welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required to restore the excellent performance of this grade in a wide range of mildly corrosive conditions.

Type 304L does not require post-weld annealing and finds extensive use in heavy gauge components where freedom from carbide weld precipitation is often required.

Application:

The common applications for the 304 stainless steel flat bar include parts that need food resistance to corrosion, and require polishing, machining, grinding, or welding. It’s looked upon as a general all-purpose metal that can be used in environments that are corrosive. This makes it a great candidate in cryogenic service and chemical industries. It is also used to build parts that handle crude oils, refined oils, inorganic and organic chemicals, nitric acid, citric acid, and acetic acid.
